How an apprenticeship could work for you

If you are a young person (15-24) looking for what’s next after school, Workskil Australia can support you through a range of services to help you find and fulfill your potential.

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a career where you earn an income while also completing a qualification.

Employers can hire an Australian Apprentice in almost any industry and many emerging industries are expanding their workforce by taking on an Australian Apprentice.

What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?

There are slight differences between apprenticeships and traineeships in Australia. Apprenticeships are generally longer at around 3-4 years and involve gaining a vocational qualification (practical preparation for work in a specific industry) and an official trade certification.

Traineeships are similar. However, they are typically shorter (1-3 years) and can be done from a Certificate II all the way to a Diploma level.

What’s in it for you?

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a great way to advance your career or experience, whilst earning an income from day one. Plus, unlike other paths post-school, you’ll have no study debt at the end and it requires no previous experience. That’s a great bonus.

With an apprenticeship or traineeship, you’ll learn on the job from experienced mentors as you develop skills to enhance your career prospects.

Unlike work experience, you’ll gain qualifications along the way, that are nationally recognised. It’ll help to build your CV and your on-the-job skills, too.
