For Jacqui, completing the Kuwa Circles program helped to expand her resume and made her feel optimistic about the future. The 22-year-old Yankunytjatjara woman had worked before but found herself looking for a new job and direction.

The team at Workskil Australia Enfield supported Jacqui with transport costs and food vouchers while working with her to explore employment options.

“They helped me to identify the types of work I would enjoy and the education or training required,” said Jacqui.

“I’m open to a lot but was still very undecided.”

When the team made Jacqui aware of the Kuwa Circles program, she was unsure but thought it was worth having a go.

“I was nervous and sceptical at first,” she said. “But I instantly fell in love with it and felt so supported throughout.”

Kuwa Circles introduced Jacqui and the other First Nations women to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers and principles through a specialised sports and cultural curriculum, with mentoring by Adelaide Crows AFLW player Danielle Ponter.

“It was educational, just not in a formal way.”

“Getting our drone licence was a highlight. We also completed Indigenous Mental Health First Aid, which was quite an eye-opener for many of us.”

Jacqui said she now feels more confident, and the certifications will help with the upcoming job interviews arranged by Workskil Australia. The social connections formed with the other women are also a source of support and lasting friendship.

“That little group is like my family now.”

Following Kuwa Circles, Jacqui had the honour of performing the on-field coin toss for the first game of the 2023 AFLW season.

“It was just an amazing atmosphere, and being a part of it gave me a feeling of purpose.”

“Seeing Danielle play football after working with her was cool as well.”

Jacqui continues appointments with her Employment Coach and feels positive moving forward.

“I know I can contact my Coach if I need anything, and they will have it sorted quickly,” she said.

“I’m very grateful for the support.”
