Paying it Forward: John Turns Success into Opportunity

Workskil Australia supported John in entering the security industry. The former Transition to Work participant is now paying it forward by recruiting job seekers Kaleb and Nino into ongoing work. This is three success stories in one.

In late 2019, John attended Workskil Australia’s Port Augusta office as a young job seeker within the Transition to Work program.

Transition to Work supports young people between the ages of 15 and 24 to plan for the future and gain employment or enter further education.

When John met with his Coach, Jodie, he had a clear picture of what he wanted; it was more about the means to make it happen.

John had secured a job interview. The position was Security Officer within the Special Operations canine unit of Port Augusta City Council. To be successful, he required the appropriate work licenses and clearances.

Jodie supported John in gaining a Certificate II in Security Operations, completing Tactical training, first aid, the necessary Consumer and Business Services Licensing requirements and working with children checks.

Workskil Australia also funded the fuel to help John attend these courses.

The support proved beneficial, and John was successful in securing the job. Within weeks, he had stable employment and was on the path towards financial stability.

This is typically where these stories end, but John had other plans.

Over the years, he and Jodie kept in contact. In 2022, we learned that John had purchased a 20% stake in the Special Operations group, and by early 2024, this expanded to full ownership of the operation.

John had always appreciated the support he received through Transition to Work. So, when two opportunities opened within Special Operations, he turned to Jodie looking to recruit two current Transition to Work job seekers.

Two young people from Port Augusta, Kaleb and Nino, were already looking to enter the security industry, having been supported by Workskil Australia to enrol in a Certificate II in Security Operations.

Workskil Australia assisted with their Consumer and Business Services Licensing requirements, uniforms and equipment, and both job seekers were hired for ongoing employment.

Since starting with Special Operations, Kaleb purchased a car and Nino is ready to move into his own housing. Both are thriving under John’s guidance.

Our heartfelt congratulations go out to all three young people.
