Wheels are in Motion for Zachary

Less than 12 months since starting the Workforce Australia – Transition to Work program, Zachary is well and truly on the road to success.

Zachary, just like many other young adults, saw getting his drivers licence as a key to unlocking new opportunities and gaining independence. However, Zachary was unsure if this was a realistic option for him as he had limited options when it came to support learning to drive.

Zachary found assistance through Workskil Australia. His Youth Coach, Kendall, was there to help him at every step of the process and explained various driver resources available. She booked him in to the myLs online course that helps prospective drivers obtain their learners permit.

After passing the course, Zachary was ready to get behind the wheel, however without access to a vehicle or a supervised instructor this was a little tricky. Zachary then, with Kendall’s help, joined the Geared 4 Work program to help him achieve his supervised driving hours completing 2 lessons each week.

During this time, Kendall also worked with Zachary on his employment goals. He wasn’t sure what career path he wanted to pursue but was open to different possibilities, especially something in the community.

“My Youth Coach helped me with applying for a kitchen hand volunteer role with Meals on Wheels. I have been doing this for the last 3 months and am really enjoying it. I have made friends and I feel proud supporting the community.”

Zachary is enjoying being in the kitchen so much that he would love to stay in the hospitality industry. He continues to be part of the Geared 4 Work program and is well on his way to gaining his P’s. He’s even started saving up for his first vehicle.

“Getting my license means I will be able to get around town a lot easier and it will definitely help me in the future when it comes to getting a job. I will also be able to help out at home with grocery shopping and errands.”
